WHAT IS A SWING?

Definition

A swing is an attempt at a pitch, that is not a bunt. That includes what is referred to as a “checked swing” or “half swing.” It is up to the judgment of the umpire(s) if the batter attempted at a pitched ball. Contrary to popular belief, a batter does not have to “break his wrist” in order to attempt at a pitch. While noting whether the swing carried the barrel of the bat past the body can aid an umpire on this call, the final decision is based on whether the batter actually attempted at the pitch.

This rule is the same in High School and Major League Baseball

Remember

  • “Breaking the wrist” does not matter when determining whether a batter swung
  • It is up to the judgement of the umpire(s)
  • A swing is not a bunt

Coaching Note:

  • Indecision leaves it up to the umpire(s) to decide whether the player swung at a pitch
  • Commit to the pitch or commit to not swinging, either way don’t leave it up to the umpires to figure it out
