This cheese toast recipe is loaded with three types of cheese and is so flavorful, but it is so quick and easy!
So much flavor in a garlicky, cheesy toast - your eyes just might roll back into your head - It's that good!
Toasty and crisp on the outside, soft and slightly chewy on the inside. The perfect complement for any dinner - especially spaghetti or lasagna.
Also great alongside roast chicken, meatloaf, or pork loin. Most anything that you need a bread side for.
You can even change up the cheeses you use if you don't have one or the others, but making it with the pepper Jack is definitely a flavor enhancer.
Even my husband, who doesn't like spicy foods, loved this cheesy bread. (Yeah, I'm always pushing the envelope with him - poor fella!)
What You'll Need
Round loaf of French or sour dough bread, cut into thick slices (½ - 1 inch)
2 Tablespoons garlic, minced
2 cups shredded pepper Jack cheese
½ cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
½ cup parmesan cheese, shredded
2 Tablespoons butter, softened
2 teaspoons dry oregano
How to Make It
Preheat your oven to 350 F.
First you will cut your bread into thick slices. I got 6 large slices from my one-pound round loaf with the ends reserved for another use.
I like to use a round loaf, as it creates varied sizes. You could also use a long loaf. Just make sure your slices are at least ½ inch thick. Mine are closer to 1 inch thick.
You will next mix the garlic, cheeses, and oregano in a medium sized bowl with a spoon until incorporated.
Before adding the cheese to the bread slice tops, you will butter the bottoms of all the slices. This will help the bread to brown and toast on the bottom.
Add all the cheese mixture to the tops of the slices, piling high, making sure to evenly distribute.
Place cheese toast in oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is nice and melty.
After the cheese has melted nicely, turn the oven on broil for about 2 minutes in order to brown the tops, making sure to keep an eye on them so they don't burn.
Enjoy this cheese toast recipe all by itself for a snack or with your favorite spaghetti dinner!
Tips
You'll want to pile the cheese mixture nice and high on the cheese bread toast slices.
And make sure your bread is thick, at least ½ inch thick, as thinner bread will get too crunchy.
I tried this recipe first with just regular loaf bread of normal thickness, and it turned out way too crunchy - more like melba toast. I think this recipe begs for thick, hearty bread slices.
Also, keep in mind that freshly grated cheese is best and will melt better for you. If you are short on time and pre-shredded is all you have, certainly go ahead and use it.
Make sure to butter the bottoms of your bread slices, as this will help the bottoms brown and crisp up a bit. Otherwise, you may end up with soft bottoms that aren't sufficiently toasted.
You can also spread butter on the top of the bread slices as well, but I didn't do that with mine.
A bit of pizza sauce would make a lovely pizza toast. You can simply add a thin smear of the sauce right before adding the cheese.
You could go all out and add your favorite pizza toppings here too if you wish. I didn't try it, but I bet it would be fabulous and so simple. Just make sure to top with the cheese last, and meats should be already cooked.
Goes great with my Spaghetti Bolognaise recipe or my Chicken Spaghetti with Rotel.
