Why isn't Taylor Swift performing halftime show? Explaining her Super Bowl 2023, 2024 rejections | Sporting News (2024)

Taylor Swift is planning to attend Super Bowl 58, but will do so as a guest, not a performer.

Swift will fly from Tokyo to Las Vegas to watch the game and support her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, as his Chiefs look to beat the 49ers and win their second consecutive Super Bowl.

While Swift isn't performing at the game, she did have that opportunity. The NFL reportedly asked her to perform the show multiple times, but the pop star declined the league's invitations.

Do those rejections mean Swift will never do it? Not at all. She is just waiting for the right opportunity to perform.

Here's what to know about the Super Bowl halftime show and why Swift isn't planning to participate in it just yet.

Why isn't Taylor Swift performing halftime show?

Swift isn't performing the Super Bowl halftime show in 2024 because she doesn't have the time to do so right now, a source told the Daily Mail.

“Taylor is busy with her current tour," the source said. "She has zero time to prepare a Super Bowl show, she will do it eventually, but she is in no rush at all to do it in Vegas or do it in the next couple of years.

“She knows she is at her peak in her career and each move from this point on is as important as the next. Working on her current tour and recording her old music and working on new music and living life are taking up the majority of her time."

That is certainly fair. Swift has been touring the world performing her "Eras Tour" show while preparing for the release of her new album, "The Tortured Poets Department" on April 19. In addition to that, she is dating Kelce and attending most of his games while also attending events such as the Grammys, among others.

As such, it's easy to see why Swift doesn't want to do the halftime show in 2024. It does, however, sound like she would be up to perform at the event at some point during her lifetime. She is simply waiting for the right moment in her career to accept the NFL's offer.

“The Super Bowl will be a nice thing to do someday but it is not a defining moment for her right now," the source told the Daily Mail. "She knows she has all the time in the world, and she always reminds her team that Madonna was 53 when she finally did the show herself, so timing is everything.

“Taylor is well aware of how she wants her career to develop and will do things her way and her way only and will not rush into something she doesn’t want to do just to do it and that includes the Super Bowl."

When will Taylor Swift perform Super Bowl halftime show?

Swift hasn't announced plans about when she might consider performing the halftime show. She will probably wait at least a few years before doing it, as The Daily Mail reported.

“She wants to be a part of the show at some point and is leaning towards doing it in a few years, especially if the Super Bowl is in Nashville," a source told The Daily Mail. "But when it comes to Vegas, any Taylor fans shouldn’t be excited that she is going to do it, because it isn’t happening.”

Swift will not perform the halftime show in Las Vegas. That honor will go to Usher, who was chosen as the headliner for the mid-game entertainment.

It makes sense that Swift would be interested in performing the halftime show if it was in Nashville. She owns two properties in Nashville and spent a lot of time there as a teenager while pursuing her music career. That connection would make performing the show a bit easier for Swift, as she would be preparing for it in a familiar location.

Nashville has yet to host a Super Bowl, but the city seems likely to at some point. The Titans are getting a new stadium in the city by 2026 and NFL fans packed the city in 2019 when the NFL Draft was held there.

Perhaps the best time for Swift to perform the Super Bowl halftime show will come when Nashville gets its new stadium. That aligns with her timeline of waiting at least a couple of years before taking on the Super Bowl halftime show.
