Selection Process FAQ | Pro Football Hall of Fame (2024)

Does the Hall of Fame Nominate individuals?

The Hall of Fame receives nominations but does not make them. Any person, including the 50 elite members of the Selection Committee, may nominate any eligible players, coaches or contributors.

What Happens After Someone is Nominated as a Modern-Era Player?

A nomination is NOT a vote for election. The Hall of Fame’s selection process includes multiple steps in which the nominees are scrutinized. The Hall facilitates the procedure of three successive reviews of increasing scrutiny with the Selection Committee. The first is a vote to reduce the long list of Modern-Era Player Nominees (typically around 120) to 25 Semifinalists, followed by a later vote to reduce to 15 Finalists. At the annual meeting shortly before the Super Bowl, the Finalists are scrutinized even further by the Selectors, who after a thorough discussion of each Finalist, reduce the list from 15 to 10,then 10 to 5. At that point, the five remaining Finalists are voted on for election into the Pro Football Hall of Fameon a yes-or-no basis. A minimum positive vote of 80%is necessary for election.

In late August, the Coach/Contributor Committee will hold itsannual meeting to put forward one name for consideration as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Seniors Committee follows the same procedures and timeline as the Coach/Contributor Committee, but it may recommend up to 3 candidates for election to the Hall each year.

In advance of both meetings for Coach/Contributor and Seniors, each Selector is provided with detailed biographical information on the candidates.

Coach/ContributorCommittee members and Seniors Committee members are assisted during their annual meetings by one or twoconsultants, chosen by the Hall’s President, who were contemporaries of the majority of the nominees. The consultant(s) offer only their opinions and are not entitled to vote. After each candidate is discussed thoroughly, the consultants are excused from the meeting.Additional discussion is conducted followed by a series of reduction votes that results in the naming ofa Coach/Contributor Finalist and up to three (3) Seniors Finalists.
