Breaking News: The San Francisco Giants are on the cusp of a major managerial shakeup, potentially hiring Tony Vitello, the University of Tennessee's highly successful baseball coach! This move, confirmed by the Chronicle, could signal a bold new direction for the team.
If Vitello takes the helm, it would be a departure from tradition, as he lacks professional baseball coaching experience. However, his reputation in the NCAA is stellar. He's transformed the Tennessee Volunteers into a powerhouse.
But here's where it gets controversial... Vitello himself has stated that "nothing is done," and he addressed the reports with his Volunteers team after a Saturday scrimmage, according to Knox News.
The Giants' president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, is making a potentially unconventional choice. The frontrunner for the position, former Giants catcher Nick Hundley, withdrew his name due to family reasons. Hundley, 42, and his wife have young daughters. He's also a San Diego resident, and the Padres are also looking for a manager.
Vitello, 47, has dramatically improved the Tennessee program since 2017. The Volunteers have reached five NCAA super regionals and made three College World Series appearances, winning the championship in 2024. He then became the highest-paid college baseball coach, signing a contract worth $3 million annually through 2029 – a salary that would be on the higher end for an MLB manager!
The Giants have strong connections to the Tennessee program, including infielder Gavin Kilen, a first-round pick in the 2025 MLB draft. They also acquired former Vols players Blade Tidwell and Drew Gilbert.
This decision would be a significant one for Posey and the Giants, who are hiring their third manager since Bruce Bochy's departure after the 2019 season. Vitello is known for his charisma and energetic style.
Posey stated he's looking for a manager who is "obsessive about the details, obsessive about work, obsessive about getting the most out of players." The Giants parted ways with Bob Melvin less than a month ago after two seasons. The team went 81-81 in 2025 and 80-82 in 2024, missing the postseason.
Vitello will have a say in the coaching staff, with two clear openings. Bench coach Ryan Christenson and third base coach Matt Williams will not return.
The Athletic was the first to report Vitello becoming the focus of the Giants’ search.
