A Picasso Mystery: Unraveling the Disappearance of a Priceless Work
A precious Picasso painting has gone missing, leaving authorities and art enthusiasts alike baffled. Spanish police are on the case, investigating the mysterious disappearance of Pablo Picasso's iconic "Still Life with Guitar" en route to an exhibition in Granada. But here's where it gets intriguing: the painting, valued at a staggering $700,000, vanished without a trace during a highly secure transportation process.
Measuring just over 5 inches by 3.9 inches, this 1919 gouache masterpiece was scheduled to be displayed at the CajaGranada Cultural Center from October 9th. Owned by a private collector, the painting's journey began in Madrid, where it was carefully packed and loaded into a van for its trip to Granada.
The transportation process was meticulously planned, with all works moved in a single, continuous movement from the van to a freight elevator, ensuring the safety and security of the artworks. However, upon arrival at the cultural center, something went awry.
As the exhibition curator and head of exhibitions prepared to unpack the works on Monday morning, they realized that Picasso's "Still Life with Guitar" was nowhere to be found. The foundation promptly reported the missing painting to the police, and an investigation was launched.
And this is the part most people miss: the investigation revealed no incidents or suspicious activity over the weekend, as the packages were under constant video surveillance. So, where did the painting disappear to? When and how did it vanish?
The police are currently working to answer these questions, and their investigation is ongoing. The case has also been added to the international database of stolen artworks, although no international police cooperation is currently underway from Granada.

And in 2021, Greek police recovered two stolen Picasso and Mondrian masterpieces almost a decade after they were taken in a daring heist.
The recent discovery of Picasso's "Tête" in a basement in Antwerp last year adds to the list of successful recoveries.
