In a world where artists often face backlash, Mariah Carey’s recent reimagining of her 1990s grunge album ‘Somebody’s Ugly Daughter’ sparked debates over its origins and reception. Under the band name Chick, she secretly released an album never officially shared by her label, allowing her to play lead vocals on backing vocals until a solo vocal track was added later. This decision raised questions about artistic freedom and promotion—because when the full version was unveiled, it received little support from Epic Records. Now, Carey is revisiting the original recordings with her lead vocals, playing unreleased tracks during interviews with fellow singer SZA and on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Both opportunities highlighted her dedication to reinventing music through raw energy. During a conversation with SZA, she revealed the songs ‘Hermit’ and ‘Love Is a Scam’, which carry Grunge-inspired vibes. On the show, she allowed a segment of ‘Prom Queen’ to feature a Buzzcocks-style punk chorus, which earned praise from both host and bandleader Questlove. Carey explained that she recorded ‘Somebody’s Ugly Daughter’ during her hit album ‘Daydream,’ saying she was rebelling against expectations and finding joy in creating music that felt authentic. She clarified, ‘I loved doing that, but at the end of the night, when the band was still there, I’d say, can you play...?’’' The release of the full version faced criticism, as it received minimal promotion from Epic Records. Carey hopes to share the version featuring her lead vocals and clarissa Dane on lead vocals (under the pseudonym D. Sue) in a future concert. Her new album ‘Here for It All’ is set to be released September 26th, with a holiday residency in Las Vegas scheduled for late November to mid December. Tickets are available at link.
