His criminal career lasted for more than 30 years (1930-until death). In his 62 years of life, he spent about 30 years in jail. On July 7, 1968, he died suffering from a fatal heart attack and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Bumpy was arrested more than 40 times and served two prison terms for narcotics-related charges.

Similarly, he staged a sit-down strike in a police station for refusing to leave as a protest against their continued surveillance. After that, Johnson was charged with refusal to leave a police station but was acquitted by a judge.
