Dr. Gibbs is a professional, knowledgable, reliable, and very friendly orthodontist! I am 57 yo, and I do not have an experience with orthodontists in NY. I checked a few alternatives, but the moment I stepped into Dr. Gibbs office, spoke with him, listened to his explantations and analyze, and then his recommendations, I knew that I TRUST him and want him to be my orthodontist. I appreciate his professionalism and decency. The staff is amazing: from the receptionist to the professionals, they are all amazing. Don't think twice! this morning I received my Invisalign trays. I am confident that the results will be great. I recommend Dr. Gibbs and his team with all my heart.

Drs. Gibbs & Kaplan are wonderful! The staff is so friendly. They always know who I am when I visit. My teeth were straightened with Invisalign in a year. My daughter’s teeth look beautiful after many years. She wore traditional braces as a kid.

What to Expect When You Have Invisalign Braces?

Invisalign in New York ($1000 discount) - Gibbs Orthodontics (2)

Invisalign is one of the most popular so-called invisible braces systems in the world, utilizing some of the most advanced orthodontic technology to achieve predictable treatment outcomes. The clear BPA-free plastic invisalign aligners are nearly invisible once in the mouth and are a highly effective alternative compared with visible metal braces. Achieve your best smile with Invisalign aligners today!

Invisalign is a system that uses a series of clear plastic aligners that fit tightly over teeth, gradually forcing the teeth to move into the proper positions and straightening your smile.

Every set of aligners is worn for two weeks before you throw them away and move on to the next set in the series. It’s a super easy treatment that has minimal effect on everyday life.

However, you may have questions about Invisalign, which is why our Certified New York City Invisalign provider, Dr. Gibbs have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions and answers from patients about their Invisalign experience.

Can you get a perfect smile with Invisalign?

You may be surprised to learn that you can participate in the treatment planning when you first consult with your orthodontist about Invisalign. Your dentist will take detailed dental impressions and photographs of your teeth for Invisalign, and they will use specialized software to plan each stage of your treatment.

The planning process generates virtual images that show how your teeth will move as they straighten gradually. You can preview these images and provide feedback on the treatment process. It's also exciting to see how your teeth will look before you wear your first aligners.

Although Invisalign is an excellent treatment that can benefit many people, it is not the only option. Dentists can now provide a wide range of very discreet braces, including fixed braces made of clear metal brackets and tooth-colored wires. Fixed braces are sometimes preferable because they provide extremely precise results. When you visit your orthodontist, they will be able to discuss the best option with you in greater detail.

Is Invisalign suitable for everyone?

Most people are concerned about their suitability. They may spend significant time researching adult orthodontics before visiting their dentist. It's understandable, but remember that your orthodontist is the best judge of suitability. Many believe they are ineligible for Invisalign and must wear traditional metal braces.

Unsurprisingly, Invisalign is a highly unappealing option, particularly for anyone with a job that requires frequent client meetings. However, Invisalign can often treat more problems caused by a bad bite or malocclusion than you might think. It is also a system that provides a variety of solutions. People with only slightly crooked teeth, for example, may benefit from a cosmetically oriented Invisalign treatment rather than a more traditional approach. Seeing your local Invisalign specialist is the best way to find out.

Am I too old for Invisalign?

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for teenagers, and these days dentists are seeing an increasing number of older adults looking to perfect their smile. Patients include adults who are well into retirement and who may well be receiving Invisalign orthodontic treatment at the same time as their grandchildren!

How long do Invisalign take to straighten teeth?

When you think of traditional braces, you often associate them as being worn for years, which is hardly an appealing thought. However, modern orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign, is far quicker and more effective.

Invisalign uses the latest technologies to move teeth efficiently, and you will begin seeing results within the first two or three months of treatment. While most people need to wear their Invisalign aligners for approximately a year, some will complete treatment more quickly.

For example, cosmetically oriented Invisalign treatment can provide results within just a few months. Because treatment is quicker, it’s also cheaper as you will need a few sets of aligners.

Is jaw pain normal with Invisalign?

Although Invisalign is a modern treatment, it is still a procedure that forces your teeth and tooth roots to move position, so it is understandable if you experience discomfort. The precise level of discomfort differs from person to person. Some people find their discomfort minimal and barely noticeable, whereas others may experience discomfort when they begin wearing a new set of aligners. It depends on your pain tolerance, but most discomfort can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Why does my Invisalign feel loose?

Because your teeth are moving positions, it’s not unusual to notice they feel slightly loose when you remove your aligners. It’s a normal side-effect of treatment as it does take time for your teeth to settle in their new positions. After your teeth have moved to the correct locations, the bone around them gradually remodels, ensuring your teeth are held firmly in place once more.

Shifting teeth is the reason why it’s so important to ensure you wear your retainers once treatment is completed. Your retainers keep your teeth in the proper positions and don’t drift back to their original places.

Can I snack while wearing Invisalign?

During treatment, it's critical to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day; ideally, only remove them when you want to eat or drink something other than water. As a result, it's more challenging to snack between meals, which may be beneficial if you're trying to lose weight!

How many times should you floss with Invisalign?

Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once daily is a normal routine that is adequate for keeping most people’s teeth and gums healthy and hygienic. However, during Invisalign treatment, orthodontists advise to brush and floss your teeth more frequently.

Every time you remove your aligners to eat something, you must clean your teeth thoroughly before you replace the aligners. Also, you will need to clean your aligners to ensure they remain fresh and hygienic. People undergoing Invisalign treatment usually need a travel toothbrush with them at all times, as well as a small tube of toothpaste and some dental floss. It’s not that much trouble as it only takes a few minutes to clean your teeth thoroughly, and the results will be well worth it!

Is it better to go to dentist or orthodontist for Invisalign?

Orthodontists have many more years of professional education and training than general dentists. Although some dentists may attend orthodontic conventions, they are not as qualified to treat misaligned and crowded teeth as an orthodontist. Invisalign orthodontists are far more qualified than dentists who have not received proper Invisalign training.

Can I pay for Invisalign with FSA or HSA funds?

Yes! Invisalign aligners for teeth straightening are an orthodontic service covered by most HSA & FSA accounts.

If you have a flexible spending account (FSA), it’s the perfect time to use it before the year’s end. Often, these pre-tax funds can cover orthodontic treatment like Invisalign or braces. Even better, your travel mileage for seeing your orthodontist also covered by an FSA!

Before beginning any treatment, we will go over all of your funding options, assist you in taking advantage of any benefits such as an FSA account, and discuss flexible payment plans.

Invisalign Teen

Invisalign in New York ($1000 discount) - Gibbs Orthodontics (8)

Invisalign Teen® is one of the company's most recent innovations. It is a system that functions similarly to regular Invisalign® but includes some new features to better serve teenagers, including:

  • Compliance Indicators: these are blue dots on the back of the aligners that wear out over two weeks, allowing the orthodontist to determine if the patient is compliant with wearing the aligners.
  • Free replacement of aligners: this allows the orthodontist to order replacement aligners if they are ever lost.

Your teen’s smile journey begins with working closely with Invisalign treatment specialist Dr. Gibbs to develop a complete digital treatment plan to plot your teen’s best smile with care from start to finish.

Invisalign treatment gives both you and your teen a better teeth-straightening experience when compared to traditional braces.

Invisalign in New York ($1000 discount) - Gibbs Orthodontics (9)

At the beginning of the treatment, your teen will receive Invisalign clear aligners created with the Invisalign system’s proprietary SmartTrack material. As a result, your teen’s smile can transform up to 50% faster.* Throughout treatment, you can monitor your son’s or daughter’s compliance through an indicator on the aligner. Your teen will wear the aligners for 22 hours per day but can easily remove them, so there are fewer interruptions to their lifestyle.

As your teen progresses through treatment, his or her smile and life will transform through a series of small, expertly designed shifts. And with the Invisalign Teen Guarantee, you have the option to switch to wires and brackets if your teen decides against Invisalign treatment within the first six months.

Invisalign FAQ's

How Do I Eat and Drink When I Have Invisalign Braces?

One of Invisalign’s biggest strengths is that these braces are removable. You probably have friends and family who have worn conventional fixed braces and have seen how they have had to change their diet during treatment. Usually, when wearing fixed braces, it’s necessary to avoid anything that could damage the brackets and wires, including very sticky, hard or crunchy foods. Although orthodontic treatment doesn’t last forever, it can be a hassle having to change your diet like this, always thinking ahead about which foods you can eat and foods that are best avoided. Because Invisalign braces are removable, there is no need to change your diet in any way. You can eat whatever you want and whenever you like. All you need do is to just remove your aligners before eating, making sure you brush your teeth thoroughly before replacing them.

Can I Play Sports with Aligners?

Although your Invisalign aligners are made from a tough plastic material, they are designed to straighten your teeth not to protect them. If you love to play sports, make sure you remove your aligners, replacing them with your sports mouthguard. This will ensure your teeth are fully protected and prevent unwanted damage to your aligners. Don’t have a custom-made, sports mouthguard and love to play contact sports? Ask your local dentist or NYC Invisalign specialist Dr. Gibbs about getting a proper mouthguard because it could be a great investment in protecting your dental health. All the trouble and expense in straightening your teeth will be wasted if you knock out a tooth during sports or chip or damage teeth. It’s far costlier to have restorative dental treatments that will probably be ongoing for life than to purchase a proper mouthguard.

Can I Play a Musical Instrument?

Wearing your aligners while playing a woodwind or brass musical instrument can be tricky. It’s best to remove them while playing, ensuring you replace your aligners as soon as you finish. Just remember that ideally, you should wear your aligners for approximately 20 to 22 hours every day.

Will My Aligners Affect Speech?

Just like any new dental appliance, you may notice your speech changes slightly as your tongue becomes accustomed to your aligners. Initially, you may find you have a slight lisp or that your mouth produces more saliva. These side-effects are perfectly normal and will typically disappear after just a few days. Within a very short while, you should have no difficulty in speaking normally.

Are Aligners Easy to Look after?

Invisalign aligners are super easy to look after, but it’s essential to take excellent care of your oral health. Make sure you brush and floss your teeth after you eat anything at all, whether it’s a snack or a full meal. If you skip brushing and flossing, plaque and food debris will become trapped in your aligner trays, potentially increasing the risk of tooth decay or gum disease. Brushing your teeth thoroughly clean will prevent this. Also, you must clean your aligner tray thoroughly when it is removed from your mouth. There are several ways you can clean aligner trays, and one is to use clear mouthwash, a proprietary denture cleaner, or a solution of vinegar and water. Just use one-part vinegar to one part water. Another option is to clean your aligner trays using one-part hydrogen peroxide to one part water.

Some people are worried that their aligner trays will smell nasty. If you care for them properly, your aligner trays shouldn’t smell at all. However, if you neglect your oral hygiene, then they could begin to smell nasty. The same goes for your breath, as provided you look after your aligners, your breath should still remain fresh.

What about Kissing Someone with Aligners?

If you want to smooch with your beloved, you don’t need to worry about it while having Invisalign treatment. The aligners are so thin that they are nearly invisible in the mouth and the chances are your other half will not notice a thing. Also, plenty of people kiss with fixed braces and aligners are much more comfortable! Unlike fixed braces, there are no brackets and wires to dig into cheeks or lips, just smooth plastic.

How Often Will I Need to See a Dentist?

Usually, it’s only necessary to see an orthodontic specialists during Invisalign treatment approximately every six weeks or so. The great thing about these visits is that they are very quick because unlike fixed braces, there aren’t any brackets or wires to adjust. Instead, your dentist will just want to check that your teeth are moving as predicted, and if needed they can provide you with more sets of aligners.

Will I Need Retainers?

Yes! When your teeth move, it’s not just the crown of the tooth as the tooth root moves too. Afterward, it takes a little while for your jawbone bone to remodel itself around the newly positioned tooth root. Without orthodotic retainers, there’s a risk that teeth could simply drift back towards their original locations. Retainers make sure this cannot happen, and it is essential to wear them as directed by your dentist. The great thing about Invisalign is that the retainers are every bit as easy to wear as the aligners because they are made from the same thin plastic material, so they are virtually invisible.

When you start an Invisalign treatment, you’ll see your orthodontist often. Thus, finding the right practice that satisfies all of these requirements is essential.
