So many Americans have memories of tangy and sweet Creamsicles melting onto their hands on hot summer afternoons as kids. Bright orange on the outside and filled with a creamy vanilla filling, commercially made Creamsicles are loaded with sugar and additives. While they're tasty, it's possible to make a healthier and equally delicious copycat of the real thing. Our recipe for an orange cream pop is made out of a combination of fruit juice and yogurt and beautifully captures the spirit of the classic Popsicle.

Homemade ice pops are a great budget-friendly way of using any fruit that you might have in abundance. They are quick and easy to make. Other than Popsicle molds and an overnight wait, you simply need two total ingredients—and optional sugar if your inner child needs a little more sweetness.

Although our version doesn't have the distinctive two layers, it still packs a lot of flavor and turns out a beautiful color. Add a little finely grated orange zest to make the flavor pop. For a bolder flavor, mix in a teaspoon or so of orange zest to bring much more citrus power. Blend and pour in minutes, freeze, and then share and enjoy as a fun family treat.

Other Tasty Ingredients

This is an easy base for an ice pop that you can play with to find your favorite flavor. Here are some ideas to get the inspiration going:

  • Use just about any juice that you love. Berry, peach, mango, and even one whole avocado make luscious and tasty treats. Fresh lemon or lime juice is also a great option.
  • Use any regular vanilla yogurt instead of Greek if you want a thinner texture. Also any fruit-flavored yogurt paired with the same fruit makes great ice pops—think strawberry yogurt with berry juice or peach yogurt with peach juice.
  • Use bottled orange juice that is not from concentrate. There are many store-bought orange juices that keep the same bright flavor of fresh citrus, but always go with organic juice as it doesn't have additives.
  • Replace the Greek yogurt with heavy cream, but add 2 tablespoons of sugar as the lack of sweetness in the cream can yield a very tart result. For extra decadence, use 1/2 cup of condensed milk and 1/2 cup of heavy cream.
  • Replace the Greek yogurt with full-fat canned coconut milk. This makes a vegan-friendly treat and the coconut milk version can play host to other flavors besides orange, pineapple being a particularly tasty addition.
  • Use honey instead of sugar to add some sweetness. To keep the ice pops strictly vegan, use agave syrup or maple syrup to add more sweetness if needed, as vegan diets do not allow for honey consumption.
