Imagine a world where history's most breathtaking monuments crumble before our eyes. It's a sobering thought, isn't it? But thankfully, organizations like the World Monuments Fund (WMF) are fighting to prevent this very scenario. Recently, the WMF hosted its annual Hadrian Gala at none other than the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art, specifically within the majestic Temple of Dendur. This event, a beacon of hope for preservation, isn't just a glamorous gathering; it's a vital fundraising effort to safeguard our shared heritage.
This isn't just any museum after-hours event. While the Met's doors typically close to the public, save for the famed Vogue-Costume Institute gala, the WMF's Hadrian Gala brings together a passionate community dedicated to preserving the world's architectural marvels. Think of engineering feats that have stood for centuries, like the Temple of Dendur itself. The WMF, with its global reach, focuses on protecting and restoring cultural landmarks, including the awe-inspiring Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia, the historic Chapel of the Sorbonne in Paris, and the enchanting Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. In fact, they're actively involved in over 700 sites across more than 100 countries!
Bénédicte de Montlaur, President and CEO of the WMF, eloquently stated the urgency of their mission: "Because of continued conflicts, climate change, over-tourism, and urbanization, cultural resources are disappearing as fast as natural ones." She emphasized the global call for assistance, highlighting the WMF's crucial role in responding to these threats.
This year's gala, a highlight of the WMF's 60th-anniversary celebrations, was one of sixty international gatherings. Previous events have graced the grounds of Versailles, Windsor Castle, and the Maharaja's Palace in Jaipur. The Met, however, provided an especially grand backdrop, drawing support from the fashion elite. Attendees included Christian Louboutin, Sabine Getty, perfumer Frederic Malle, and Ashley Olsen, who wore a gown from her own brand, The Row.
Louboutin, the 2022 Hadrian Award recipient, shared a fascinating detail about his footwear, explaining that his boots were a gift from the King of Bhutan. The boots, made of blue satin and silk brocade, were embroidered in Bhutan by The Royal School of the 13 Artisans.
The evening featured heartfelt acceptance speeches and honored guests, including David M. Rubenstein, whose words sparked memories of his travels. The King and Queen of Bhutan, also honored, sent a delegation and a video message highlighting the WMF's five-year restoration of the Trashigang Dzong fortress after a devastating earthquake in 2009.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, thought-provoking. While the event celebrated preservation, it also took place in a world grappling with issues like over-tourism and the impact of climate change on these very monuments.
The festivities continued at the Payne Whitney House on Manhattan's Upper East Side, now known as Villa Albertine. This stunning McKim, Mead, and White-designed home, which became a hub for the French Institute for Culture and Education in 2023, transformed into an after-party-slash-members club. Guests danced, sipped Louis Roederer Champagne and Ragnaud-Sabourin Cognac, and participated in a silent auction. The auction featured luxurious items, including a trip to Bhutan and a limited-edition, hand-painted steamer trunk from Jaipur—perhaps a fitting piece of luggage for such a journey? These contributions, along with generous donations, helped the gala raise an impressive $2.5 million in a single night.
