Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (2024)

Talent Builds for Mages

Due to the Fire immunity of most bosses in Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, youwill be stuck using Frost based talent builds while raiding for a while at thestart of WoW Classic.

This being said, feel free to use a Fire build instead if you are focused ondungeons, as Fire is a very effective build for most of them.

Mage Talent Builds: Arcane Power Frost

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (1)

This build is the highest Frost damage dealer, allowing to have some of the bestFrost tree damage oriented talents, such as Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (2) Ice Shards, combined with thebest of the Arcane tree, including the powerful Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (3) Arcane Power.

Due to the strict talent tree required to get Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (4) Frost Channeling and Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (5) Arcane Power, the only preference points available are the ones we put into Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (6) Magic Absorptionand Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (7) Improved Arcane Explosion. You can replace these with points into Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (8) Magic Attunement,Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (9) Wand Specialization or Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (10) Improved Counterspell.

1.3.

Mage Talent Builds: Winter's Chill Frost

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (11)

Due to its great power in buffing Frost spell damage, Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (12) Winter's Chill isa must have from one of the Mages during Molten Core and Blackwing Lair. Due to thehigh amount of points required to get it, this build will do less damage than ArcanePower Frost, but boost the raid's damage as a whole.

Since you are forced to go deep into the Frost tree anyway, there are a lot ofpreference points available. We opted to make the build as AoE grinding friendlyas possible, with points into Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (13) Permafrost and Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (14) Improved Blizzard. If you want more single-target damage against regular enemies instead, simply swapthese points into Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (15) Improved Frost Nova and Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (16) Shatter, or any othertalent of your preference.

1.4.

Mage Talent Builds: Fire

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (17)

Putting it quite simply: this is the highest Mage (and possibly ranged) damagespec in the game, as long as what you are hitting is not Fire immune or resistant.

Once your critical strike chance is high enough, Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (18) Ignite becomes a monster, constantly fed by all the Mages in your group into dealing higher, and higher numbersover time. The other talents in the Fire Mage tree are also very powerful for damagedealing, with Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (19) Fire Power and Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (20) Critical Mass alone providing 10%more damage and 6% more critical strike chance.

While spare points are scarce, once you feel your Mana does not need help duringfights, feel free to drop points in Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (21) Magic Absorption and Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (22) Arcane Meditation, and put them into Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (23) Improved Flamestrike, Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (24) Blast Wave, and Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (25) Improved Arcane Explosionfor a massive AoE damage boost.

2.

Notable DPS Mage Talents

2.1.

Arcane Tree

The arcane tree is full of utility goodies for Mages, including very powerfuldamage boosting talents at the end of the tree.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (26) Arcane Concentration allows Clearcasting to happen after 10%of your casts, which saves a ton of Mana over time and allows gameplay such as usingweaker, cheaper spells to proc it, followed by your strongest, most expensive spell.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (27) Presence of Mind makes your next spell be instantly cast, but only onceevery 3-minutes. This can be used to deal burst damage with Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (28) Frostbolt andother longer cast time spells, or to instantly crowd control an enemy with Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (29) Polymorph, for example.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (30) Arcane Power increases your damage by 30% but makes them also cost 30%more Mana, and only lasts 15 seconds, with a 3-minute cooldown. This is a very powerfulboost to your damage, which ultimately requires a heavy commitment to the Arcanetree, and as such is not available to most builds.

2.2.

Fire Tree

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (31) Ignite allows your critical strikes to create a damage over time effecton the target for 40% extra damage over 4 seconds. This damage over time effecthas its duration reset, and grows, for each extra critical strike from Ignite Mage'sFire spells landed in its duration, which has incredible synergy with a raid fullof Fire Mages.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (32) Improved Scorch allows Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (33) Scorch to stack up a debuff that increaseenemy damage taken from your Fire spells, which is obviously a very powerful effectthat you will want to have, and keep, on longer lived enemies as much as possible.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (34) Blast Wave is both a powerful AoE damage spell, and a crowd control tooldue to its 50% slow for 6 seconds to anyone hit. Use it when kiting, and to open upa fight, especially against multiple opponents.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (35) Combustion is a powerful 3-minute cooldown that causes your criticalstrike chance with Fire spells to increase by 10% (stacking) for each of your Firespell hits, lasting until you caused 3 critical strikes with Fire spells. Use itfor bursting down enrage phases or whenever all of your other cooldowns and trinketsare also available.

2.3.

Frost Tree

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (36) Permafrost increases the duration of your slowing effects by up to 3seconds and makes them slow for 10% more. This allows lower duration slows, suchas Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (37) Improved Blizzard to be much more annoying and impactful on opponents, and makes Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (38) Cone of Cold have a longer slow duration than its cooldown.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (39) Cold Snap has a lengthy 10-minutes cooldown, but instantly resets allof your Frost spell cooldowns when used. This makes it an incredibly flexible tool, for damage in the form of back-to-back Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (40) Cone of Colds, or for added controlin the form of extra Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (41) Frost Novas and Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (42) Ice Blocks.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (43) Improved Blizzard causes your Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (44) Blizzard spell to slow hit targetsby up to 65% for 2 seconds. When combined with Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (45) Permafrost, the durationand slow effects are increased to 5, and 75%, respectively, which is extremely strongfor controlling packs of enemies, or slowing single enemies with the Rank 1 version.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (46) Ice Block literally turns you into an ice block, immune to all enemyattacks for 10 seconds, but also incapable of performing any action while it is active. It removes all debuffs on you, which makes it extremely useful against certain bosses, but its main use is to allow you to survive otherwise deadly damage.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (47) Winter's Chill makes your Frost spells increase the likelihood furtherFrost spells will critically strike the target by up 10%, when at 5 stacks. This is avery powerful raid buff when there are several Frost Mages present, and should beapplied as soon as possible.

Classic Mage DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents (48) Ice Barrier creates a barrier of ice around you, absorbing damage for1 minute. This is very useful, for the extra survivability, and also for theimmunity to spell interruption from damage while it lasts.
