Celsius to Fahrenheit - Formula, Chart | C to F Conversion (2024)

Celsius to Fahrenheit is the conversion of temperature from Celsius unit to Fahrenheit unit. Temperature scales provide a way of measuring how hot or cold a body is. Fahrenheit and celsius are temperature scales. The Celsius scale was invented by Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer, in 1742 and the Fahrenheit scale was invented by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a German physicist, in 1724. The symbol used for Fahrenheit is °F whereas for Celsius it's °C.

Water freezes at 32° Fahrenheit and boils at 212° Fahrenheit on a Fahrenheit scale whereas, on Celsius or centigrade scale, water freezes at 0° Celsius and boils at 100° Celsius. i.e., the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales have different reference points and thus, learning the C to F formula for conversion of Celsius to Fahrenheit is important.

Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula

Celsius to Fahrenheit formula is the conversion formula to convert the given temperature from °C to temperature in °F. We know that the freezing point of water is 0 degrees on the Celsius scale and 32 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale, whereas the boiling point of water is 100 degrees on a Celsius scale and 212 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale. The formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit is given by: °F = °C × (9/5) + 32.

By using this formula, we can convert any given temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit (C to F).

How to Convert Celsius into Fahrenheit?

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, we will be using the same C to F formula given above. C to F conversion formula for a given value can be expressed as,

°F = °C × (9/5) + 32

Where,

  • C = Measure of temperature in degree celsius/centigrade (°C).
  • F = Measure of temperature in degree Fahrenheit (°F).

To convert degree Celsius to Fahrenheit, we can follow the steps given below:

  • Step 1: Identify the temperature value in Celsius.
  • Step 2: Multiply the given temperature by 9.
  • Step 3: Divide the product by 5.
  • Step 4: Add 32 to thae result of Step 3. That will be the required value in degree Fahrenheit (°F).

For example, let us convert 20° Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = 20 × (9/5) + 32 = 36 + 32 = 68°F. Therefore, 20° Celsius is equal to 68° Fahrenheit (20°C = 68°F).

Derivation of C to F Formula

As we are already aware of the boiling point and freezing point of water at the normal pressure on the Celsius scale as well as Fahrenheit scale, we will be using the same for the C to F formula derivation.

  • The freezing point of water in Fahrenheit is 32°F and its boiling point is 212°F. So, there is a difference of 212 - 32 = 180°F in the freezing point and boiling point of water (in °F).
  • Similarly, the freezing point of water in Celsius is 0°C and its boiling point is 100°C. So, there is a difference of 100 - 0 = 100°C in the freezing point and boiling point of water (in °C).

Here, the scales rise at a different rate (100 vs 180). Fahrenheit and Celsius are directly proportional to each other. With the rise of temperature on the Celsius scale, the temperature on the Fahrenheit scale also rises and vice versa. So, the ratio of change from C to F is 100/180 or 5/9. From F to C, it is 180/100 or 9/5.

Water freezes at 0°C and 32°F, so the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales start with different points (0 vs 32). If we want to relate them using an equation form, then we need to add/subtract 32 to make both sides equal. So, at this level (freezing point of water), the equation formed is °F = 9/5 × °C + 32.

Thus on conversion, we get °F = °C × (9/5) + 32. Therefore, the formula for converting Celsius to Fahrenheit scale reduces to °F = °C × (9/5) + 32.

Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula Using Straight Lines

Let x = the temperature on Centigrade scale and y = the temperature on the Fahrenheit scale. Since x and y are directly proportional, there is a linear relationship between x and y. Thus, this relationship can be found by using the equation of the straight-line formula.

By using the freezing and boiling point of water on Centigrade and Fahrenheit scales, we have the points (0, 32) and (100, 212). Let us assume that

  • (x1, y1) = (0, 32)
  • (x2, y2) = (100, 212)

The slope of the line is, m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1) = (212 - 32) / (100 - 0) = 180/100 = 9/5.

Thus, the equation of the line by the slope-intercept form is:

y = mx + c

y = 9/5 • x + 32 (∵ (0, 32) = (0, c) = the y-intercept)

Now, we will replace y with °F and x with °C, we get:

°F = °C × (9/5) + 32.

Hence, C to F formula is derived.

FAQs on Celsius to Fahrenheit

What is the Conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion implies converting the given temperature from Celsius scale to Fahrenheit scale. It is done by multiplying the centigrade value by 9 followed by dividing the product by 5, and adding 32 to the result.

What is 36.8 Celsius to Fahrenheit?

36.8° Celsius is equivalent to 98.24° Fahrenheit. It can be found out by substituting the value of C = 36.8 in the C to F formula which is °F = (9/5) °C+32. Then we get °F = (9/5) × 36.8 + 32 ⇒ °F = 66.24 + 32 ⇒ °F = 98.24°.

Convert the Following Values From Celsius to Fahrenheit: 38, 20, 180, 70, 35, and 36.

What is 200°C to °F?

200° Celcius is equivalent to 392° Fahrenheit. To get this, put °C = 200 in the formula °F = (9/5) °C+32. Then we get °F = (9/5) (200) + 32 = 392. Thus, 200 C to F is 392°F.

How to Derive Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula?

In order to derive the degree Celsius to Fahrenheit formula, we need to consider their boiling and freezing points and determine the relation between them. Then:

  • The conversion factor is 180/100 or 9/5.
  • Also, 0° C is equivalent to 32°F.

By using these two points, we can arrive at this equation, °F = °C×(9/5)+32.

What is Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius Formula?

  • The Celsius to Fahrenheit formula says °F = (9/5) °C+32.
  • The Fahrenheit to Celsius formula says °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9.

Each of these formulas can be derived from the other. For example: °F = (9/5) °C+32 ⇒ °F - 32 = (9/5) °C ⇒(°F - 32) × 5/9 = °C.

What is 9/5 in Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula?
