And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Gospel: Mark 7:31-37
In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.
Guidelines: Human life is always a daily story of two options – either to turn to God and good or turn to Satan and evil. The former leads to true satisfaction and joy while the latter to increased dissatisfaction and frustration
1. In today’s word of God, we have two contrasting figures and situations. In the first reading from 1 Kings, we have Jeroboam, the king of Israel turning to evil and misleading the people also to abandon the true God and turn to idols. But in the gospel, we see Jesus turning to God and leading the people to experience the providential care of God.
2. In the gospel, we have the miracle of the multiplication of 7 loaves and a few fish and feeding four thousand. Jesus feels compassion for the people hungry for three days; he thinks of the good and need of the people.
3. But in contrast, Jeroboam thinks of his own throne. He fears that people would be drawn to the Jerusalem temple and thus defect from their loyalty to him. So, He erects two golden calves, many temples to any gods, and anyone a priest.
4. The consequence of Jeroboam’s evil doing is infidelity to the true God and eventual destruction. But the consequence of Jesus’ compassionate doing is deepened fidelity to God, superabundance, and satisfaction. The hungry people were not only fully satisfied but there were also 7 baskets full of leftovers.
5. This miracle once again confirms that God is ever compassionate to us. He is so sensitive and concerned for us. He will not leave us hungry and struggling in our desert and deprived situations. He will not allow us to faint on the way. He intervenes to feed us and strengthen us. He takes care of us and satisfies us.
6. So, we are invited to turn to Jesus when we are hungry and in need. Confide in him. We need not be worried about the magnitude of the need like four thousand and the smallness of our resources like 7 loaves and a few fish.
7. He would multiply them into superabundance. All that is needed is to find out and pool together our limited resources, place them in the hands of Jesus, trust his power and be satisfied.
Practice: God has compassion for us and He constantly takes steps to give us satisfaction and fulfilment. From our part, what is required is to trust in God’s compassion and providence even in desperate situations and be satisfied and fulfilled

Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
No matter our circ*mstances or fears, Jesus makes us whole again. God's mercy is more significant than anything we may be experiencing. All we have to do is call on the Lord. Jesus knows our situation and wants to heal us.
Keeping our children fed is perhaps the most primal parental responsibility. Jesus had pity on the crowd and explicitly said so. They had been with Him for three days! Why had they stayed so long, knowing that they did not have enough food for the journey?

In the Gospel of Mark 8:1–10, we encounter a vivid depiction of Jesus Christ's profound compassion and divine providence through the miracle of feeding four thousand with seven loaves of bread and a few fish. This narrative not only showcases Jesus's miraculous powers but also offers theological and spiritual insights.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing."
For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.
Whatever life they find in the here and now will come at the cost of losing the life that is abundant forever. Those who do willingly lose their lives by dying to themselves for His sake, however, will find eternal life. In fact, following Jesus is the path to the life that is true and lasting.
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
The Gospel affirms that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son for our salvation. Despite our sinfulness, God offers His love. God loves you because that is simply what He does. His love is not based on your goodness, but only on His unconditional love.
Today's gospel reminds me of the dogma of the Trinity, a fundamental belief of Christianity. The presence of the three representative disciples— Peter, James, and John—and the conversation between Jesus, Moses, and Elijah brought to mind the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

If I believe that God has my best interests at heart, but I ask for a sign, am I really just testing God like the Pharisees? Trusting God does not require proof or a specific sign. Trust allows us to move through life with confident faith.
Is this why we are deaf to most things in our lives, including Jesus? In today's Gospel, Jesus had traveled away from the Jewish people and went into the land of the gentiles. These people probably did not know who Jesus was, but instead saw a man of great faith and healing ability.
Gospel. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
